Contemporary Russian Photography is the first extensive publication presenting the history of Soviet-Russian creative photography from the early 1950s to 2012. This book is based on a broad collection of photographic work never before assembled from these years. The book presents the evolution of creative photography of the post-Stalin period through the wild experimentation of Perestroika and its aftermath in the 1990s to the work of young Russian photographers today. In its presentation of Russian photography, the book shows the remarkable breadth of the photographic arts in Russia over the past 66 years. The essays provide a re-examination of the history of creative photography in the Soviet Union and Russia after Stalinism.

The history of Russian creative photography since the late 1950s, its artists and artworks, are the subjects of essays by the leading Russian curators and independent art historians, Evgeny Berezner, Irina Chmyreva and Natalia Tarasova.
Former Deputy Director General for photography and multi-media projects at the ROSIZO State Museum and Exhibition Center of the Russian Ministry of Culture and Deputy Director for photography and multi-media projects at Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Evgeny Berezner curated over 150 exhibitions of contemporary and classical Russian photography.
Irina Chmyreva is the senior researcher for photography at the Department of Russian Art of the 20th Century in the State Research Institute of Art History in the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. She has written widely on Russian photography.
Natalia Tarasova has been curating exhibitions of contemporary and classical photography since the mid-nineties in Russia and abroad. She is the Assistant Professor at the Photography Art Department of Moscow State University of Culture
Wendy Watriss, curator and co-founder of FotoFest International has worked extensively with Soviet and Russian photography and this team of Russian curators. Her introduction pays homage to the durability of the creative Russian spirit and its contemporary history.
Looking at the Future of the Planet
Changing Circumstances is an expansive presentation of international contemporary photography, video, and new media art addressing the challenges presented by global change. It shows the works of thirty-four international artists, focusing on the ways in which these media reflect on our relationship, as individuals and as a society, to the natural environment around us.
An important aspect of this presentation is how individual artists are using their work to address the impact of human behavior on the natural environment. The purpose of the book is to provoke, through visual art, new ways of thinking about how we see our role within the natural environment and our connection(s) to the rest of the planet—and how this affects our future. The book looks at ways in which artists and scientists are re-visioning our relationship with the Earth, its oceans and atmosphere.
The artists and artworks confront a broad range of issues that are challenges to the future of the Earth. These include climate change, water, energy, biodiversity, and food production, population, natural resources, waste, and migration. Many of the works present atypical uses of visual art and photography to address these changes with new media, moving image, performance, and text.
Essays by Thomas E. Lovejoy, professor of environmental science at George Mason University (Virginia), and Geof Rayner, honorary research fellow of City University
London and a founder of Photofusion Photography Centre (London), look at the dynamic relationships between contemporary art photography, issues of global change, biodiversity and the relationship of human society to the environment. In her essay, FotoFest International co-founder and curator Wendy Watriss writes about the need for a new vision of Nature. FotoFest executive director Steven Evans provides the introduction for the book. In artist statements accompanying their images, the participating artists
present their own perspectives on the state of Earth’s ecosystems and the impacts of human society on the planet in the age of the Arthropocene, as widely recognized by scientists today.

Contemporary Arab Photography, Video and Mixed Media Art
View From Inside is an expansive presentation of contemporary Arab photography, video, and mixed media art from the Middle East and North Africa. The book shows the works of 49 leading Arab artists from 13 different countries. The works reflect the emergence of photographic, video and digital art as important forms of creative visual expression in the Arab world since the 1990s. The artworks address a broad range of issues that the artists themselves have defined as important to the modern Arab experience.
Four texts cover the early appearance of photography in the Middle East and North Africa in the mid-nineteenth century through photography's evolution as an integral part of the contemporary Arab art world:
The author of the lead essay on contemporary photographic art is the pioneering curator and expert on classical Islamic art and contemporary Arab art, Karin Adrian von Roques. Ms. von Roques has worked in the Middle East for more than twenty years, bringing important contemporary Arab art to museum audiences in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Essays on the history of Arab photographic expression have been written by Samer Mohdad, a well-known Lebanese photographer, writer and co-founder of the Fondation Arabe pour l'Image in Beirut.
Dr. Claude W. Sui, Senior Curator of the Forum International of Photography at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim, Germany and curator of exhibitions on nineteenth century photography in Arabia including To the Holy Lands: Mecca and Medina to Jerusalem.
Mona Khazindar, Director General of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris looks at the development on the history of modern Arab photography and its relationship to contemporary art.
Wendy Watriss, Senior Curator and Artistic Director for FotoFest International provides the philosophical overview of the book in her introduction.
